Artsbreak

We had some wonderful wāhine be stationed in our Artsbreak area over the weekend.

  • Lindy will be leading a community canvas painting of a Motu landscape at The Muster!

Lindy is a physiotherapist who loves to paint. She lives with her husband Donald on a sheep and beef hill country farm just out of Pahiatua. Lindy has been painting under landscape painter Jane Sinclair from Masterton since 2016, and, with her encouragement and guidance, Lindy has developed her own style. She paints flowers in landscapes, be it a paddock, garden, roadside or wasteland, letting each flower grass seed head have its day. With her paintings Lindy loves to convey how every little plant does its bit for our environment and show that there is beauty in the smallest places, light in the shadows, and a sense of community as plants grow beside each other.

  • Kelly Spencer will be painting a mural in the Artsbreak area at The Muster.

Join Kelly in painting a mural which will be left as a gift for the students at Motu School. In Kelly’s characteristic bright and beautiful colours, the mural celebrates the beauty of the coming together for the weekend. Watch Kelly, and join in the painting of the mural.

  • Maiko will be one of the artists in the Artsbreak Area at The Muster.

Maiko was born in Southampton, England to a Japanese mother and British father.  They moved to Tairāwhiti Gisborne when Maiko was 3 years old.

It wasn't until her mid-30s that Maiko’s art journey began, having been a primary teacher for 13 years prior. She decided to take the plunge and change her course in life by studying at Toihoukura, School of Māori Visual Art.

Many of her aesthetics come from her mother’s heritage. Shibumi speaks of simplicity, refinement, balance and Wabi-sabi, the acceptance of transience, impermanence and imperfection. A reminder to appreciate and find beauty in every aspect of life and be present in the moment.

Now Maiko finds balance in her life by creating art and teaching mindfulness classes at Te Wharau School. Tamariki learn about their brain, how to self-regulate their emotions, growth mindset, as well as helpful mindful and breathing practices.

Maiko will be one of the artists in the Artsbreak area, where you can join her in getting creative with multi-media, and maybe even learn some things about mindfulness and creativity.
